2012 Tempranillo Estate

Dark, dusty aromas of wet earth, black olive, fennel and aged tobacco, with lifted notes of cardamom, sweet blood orange and dried berry fruit. Savory, earth-driven characters meld with flavors of bitter dark chocolate, orange peel and anise, while firm, densely-packed tannins fill out the palate to a savory, long-lasting finish.

Winemaker Notes

In 2011 we harvested for the second time only, a small, single block of Tempranillo grown at our Blackrock Estate Vineyard. This vineyard characteristically imparts wild and foxy flavors to its wines, working well to compliment the dusty, leathery qualities of the Tempranillo grape. Fruit was hand-harvested and sorted into a small oak open-top fermenter, and underwent fermentation by native yeast. After three weeks on skins, the wine was gravity-drained and skins lightly pressed into new and used French oak barriques for 22 month maturation. As one of the very few producers of Tempranillo in Washington State, we endeavor to create an authentic representation of this renowned Spanish varietal.
